Dawkins played this video at his talk at the Wharton today, and I found it pretty humorous. For those who don't know, the banana has been subject to artificial selection for at least 5000 years, beginning in Papua New Guinea.

A glimpse into the future?
So as a new blog is being started, full of hope and excitement, I think it's only appropriate to look at the harsh transparency of the internet.
Given the fact that myself and almost everyone I know is at least on facebook, if not also myspace, twitter, digg, reddit, pownce, or any number of various blogging sites, will anyone be employable in five years? Will we all have the incriminating photos of our 4th beer bong of some unfortunate night? Will that terribly offensive and racist slur we wrote (entirely in jest, of course) on our foreign friend's wall exist in the aether for all eternity?
As we progress further into the age of the internet we are slowly becoming used to the fact that privacy is a luxury of the past. No longer can we say or do whatever we want with anywhere near the same level of assurance that we won't find our actions recorded and stored for all to see and judge. Sure, anyone will tell you that you shouldn't put anything on facebook that you don't want the whole world to see, but then why do so many people still have incriminating content that they themselves posted?
The answer I pick is that people just don't stop to think. People don't care what's five years down the road. Sure, we're all having fun now, but what are we going to do when the fun stops and suddenly we have no job and no respect?
Ok, so I may be exaggerating a bit, but the fact remains that maybe it would be better to think a bit more about what we post on the internet. The photos of the crazy parties and the vaguely offensive inside jokes may be what we want our friends to see on facebook, but it's not only our friends that can see that information. Everything we do is recorded for all the world to see. Privacy is a thing of the past.
